The Adobe Garamond™ font family is based upon the typefaces first created by the famed French printer Claude Garamond in the sixteenth century. This serif face was created by Robert Slimbach and released by Adobe in ; its italics are influenced by the designs of Garamond’s assistant, Robert Granjon.

Overview. The Stempel Garamond™ font family was released in by D. Stempel AG, its design based on the Egenolff-Berner specimen of Therefore, unlike some of the other Garamond variations in use today, the Stempel Garamond font is a genuine revival of Garamond’s original typeface.

The last book I read was a hardback novel about the story of an estranged Sri Lankan family with plenty of drama and emotional upheaval. It was the kind of book you start and have to read through without putting it down.

At the end of the book there was a little footnote saying how and why the author had chosen to print the book with the Garamond typeface. Garamond is a group of many old-style serif typefaces, named for sixteenth-century Parisian engraver Claude Garamond (generally spelled as Garamont in his lifetime).

Garamond-style typefaces are popular and often used, particularly for printing body text and books. Garamond worked as an engraver of punches, the masters used to stamp matrices, the moulds used to cast metal ry: Serif.

Garamond truly lives on paper, so it is unsurprising that you find it quite often in books. Some of the most popular books have been set in a form of Garamond including the books of Dr. Seuss and all of the Harry Potter novels in addition to many book covers. Claude Garamont (c. –), known commonly as Claude Garamond, was a French type designer, publisher and punch-cutter based in Paris.

Often used for printing body text and books. No matter how stunning your book cover is, or how amazing the story, choosing the right font for your book can make a big difference when you publish your book. The objective is to create a coherent and visually correct reading flow, so that it does not distract the reader, but it.

Biography on Claude Garamond. Born in Paris, France inGaramond started his career out as an apprentice for the Parisian punch-cutter and printer, Antoine Augereau in It was during this early part of the 16th century that Garamond and his peers found that the typography industry required unique multi-talented people.

If you worry about Garamond looking too small and cramped, try leading out the lines a bit. (Leading means adding small amounts of spacing between the lines.) It’ll give you the airy look you like without making the book look like it was designed for a child or youth. Tschichold turned to the sixteenth century for inspiration, and the story has a complicated family thread that connects his Sabon design to the Garamond lineage.

Jakob Sabon, who the type is named for, was a student of the great French punchcutter Claude Garamond. He completed a set of his teacher’s punches after Garamond’s death in   4.

Decorative ornament—Here a decorative leaf from the Zapfino font strikes a graceful note with the Adobe Garamond Pro body text. Printer’s ornament—Throughout the history of printing type designers have created typographic ornaments that printers use to add decorative touches when can draw on these historical forms for text breaks, too.

Garamond is by no means a universal choice, but it makes a fine default. It can be excellent in books; it really depends on the vibe you want to convey.

Good book faces are generally medium in construction — medium proportions, stroke weight, x-height, set width, counters, descenders. Claude Garamond is specimen book provides background on the design and use of Adobe Garamond Pro, and its historical background.
